Okay, so you are studying criminology. Congratulations first of all on getting on the course! Criminology and the study of the criminal mind is one of the most sought after subjects out there at the moment. If you have been selected to take this course, then you clearly have the inbuilt resources to do well. So, how do you get ahead of the competition with a killer dissertation? Well, the first thing that I would recommend that you do is dig out a decent dissertation sample. This will give you the structure that you need to write your own carefully crafted masterpiece. A lot of students struggle with where they should look. Well, sometimes you simply have to go back to basics and start trawling the places that everyone else thinks are beneath them. Hopefully, my eight places to check will point you in the right direction.

Your college website

This should be the first port of call for any budding criminologist. Not only is your college website likely to have samples. They will also be localized. Namely, they will have been written by students who have previously trodden an identical path to yourself.

Your lecturer

Think of the Prof, as your modern day Miss Marple. It is not just the students that get graded and monitored. Your tutors get assessed too. They get paid to help you succeed, so put them to work. Ask them if they have any samples that they can show you. Chances are they will be delighted to help.

Friends and fellow students

There is no harm in pooling resources, especially if you are simply looking for how you should structure your essay. If you are looking for ideas, then asking students who have gone before is a good idea, while asking your competition is not!

The internet

A general Google search will throw up links to an abundance of sites offering help with this issue. Just make sure that you explore the free options first and don’t fall into the trap of paying for it.

Rehabilitation centers

Some rehabilitation centers and community groups keep sample dissertations for research. You could always try asking them. However, their answers may vary. Especially if other people have had the same idea.

The Library

Your library is a treasure trove of information just waiting to be explored. Make sure that you check it out.

Your local Bookstores

Most major bookstores will contain an academic section. You can go along and purchase a book, or you can be really cheeky and browse the book while you are there.

Professional bodies and organizations

Depending on your country of residence, there should be a whole host of professional bodies and organizations that may be able to assist you. For example, in America you could contact The American Society of Criminology.

Good luck!
